Marian is a research professor for Information Visualization & Management at the Urban Futures Institute of the University of Applied Sciences Potsdam. He offers courses for students enrolled in interface design, urban futures, and the information sciences. Together with Prof. Boris Müller, he heads the UCLAB, a visualization research group situated between design, computing, and the humanities.

After completing his studies in Computational Visualistics (Dipl.-Ing.) at the Otto-von-Guericke University Magdeburg, Marian Dörk did his doctorate on the topic of visualization for information seeking at the Interactions Lab at the University of Calgary in Canada (2008-2012). During his years as a PhD student, he had the opportunity to collaborate with researchers and engineers in the research departments of Google, Microsoft and IBM. Afterwards he spent a year as a postdoctoral researcher at the Culture Lab at Newcastle University, UK (2012-2013), researching visualizations for playful access to networked data sets and unstructured text data.

Marian Dörk’s research activities focus on information visualization with a particular sensitivity towards social, cultural and technological transformations. From 2014 to 2017, he led the BMBF project Visualizing Cultural Collections (VIKUS), which was followed by numerous collaborative projects with cultural institutions and research institutes. Marian is interested in novel uses of information visualization to support a wide range of data practices especially in the context of cultural collections and urban transformations.

Marian Dörk is responsible for the overall management of the Collisions project with Tatiana Brandrup and also manages the research field of information visualization.
